Inspired by a lethal viper, the Water Moccasin Shot is a potent mix of peach schnapps, whiskey, sweet and sour mix, and triple sec. As legend has it, this deadly drink tastes like canned peaches and is dangerously smooth on the way down. One too many, and you’ll end up heaving in the hospital as if you were bitten by the real thing.

Bar Tools

  • Jigger or small measuring cup
  • Cocktail shaker

To serve: Serve in a shot glass.

Ingredients (2-3 Servings)

  • 1 oz. peach schnapps
  • 1 oz. whiskey
  • 1 oz. sweet and sour mix (easy recipe below)
  • 1 dash triple sec

To garnish: No adornments necessary.

How to Make

History

Though the mastermind behind the Water Moccasin Shot is TBA, we do know the drink takes its name from a poisonous viper. Endemic to the Southern United States, water moccasins (a.k.a. cottonmouths) live in warm wetland habitats and are notoriously aggressive. Alas, we can only assume that this shot was invented somewhere below the Mason-Dixon, perhaps on the banks of the Mississippi River or the outskirts of a cypress swamp.

FAQs

What kind of whiskey should I use?

Traditionally, the Water Moccasin Shot is made with Crown Royal Deluxe. Crisp and bright on the nose, this Canadian spirit offers notes of spiced apples, vanilla custard, and a dash of cinnamon. Plus, it’s pretty cheap. Go with Buffalo Trace if you’re craving a more refined whiskey taste.

Can I make my own sweet and sour mix?

You bet! Begin by adding 1/4 cup of sugar and 1/4 cup of water to a saucepan over low heat. Dissolve the sugar and water, then turn off the heat and let it cool. Combine it with a 1/4 cup of lime juice and a 1/4 cup of lemon juice (fresh-squeezed is always better). Measure out 1 oz. for this drink and store the rest in an airtight container.

Is the Water Moccasin Shot tasty?

Living up to its name, the Water Moccasin Shot has a bite of booziness that burns on the way down. But compared to most high-octane drinks, this serpentine sip is relatively smooth. In fact, some folks even serve it as a cocktail with a splash of tonic water or lemon-lime soda.
