If you like your rum cocktails strong and fruity, but not frozen, then the El Presidente — with its combination of rum, vermouth, and orange curaçao — may be just what you’re looking for. Light notes of white rum and sweet blanc vermouth underscore the tangy orange-forward flavor of the curaçao, while a splash of grenadine adds a hint of pomegranate flavor.

The grenadine’s red hue enhances the orange coloring of the curaçao to create a cocktail that’s as delightful to look at as it is to drink.

Fill your mixing glass halfway with ice cubes. Add in the rum, vermouth, curaçao, grenadine and bitters. Gently stir (don’t shake) your ingredients until chilled, then strain into a cocktail glass. History

Created in Cuba more than a century ago, the original Presidente cocktail can be found in John B. Escalante’s “Manual del Cantinero”, a Cuban bartender’s handbook published in Havana in 1915. Escalante’s recipe calls for 2 parts vermouth Chambery (aka “blanc vermouth”) to 1 part Bacardi rum. Over time, the recipe has evolved to be equal parts vermouth and rum – and while many mixologists now substitute dry vermouth for the sweeter blanc vermouth, the original Cuban white rum, Bacardi, remains the brand of choice.

FAQs

What kind of rum works best?

The original 1915 recipe specifies Bacardi white rum, however any good quality, light/white rum will work.

Can I use dry vermouth instead of blanc vermouth?

Although traditionalists may argue that an authentic El Presidente requires the sweeter taste of blanc vermouth, the herbal notes of dry vermouth give a tasty alternative that plays nicely with the citrusy flavor of orange curaçao.

What are suggested substitutes for Orange Curaçao?

Triple Sec, Grand Marnier or Cointreau are equally good alternatives for Orange Curaçao.

How do I make my own grenadine?

Grenadine is essentially a simple syrup with pomegranate juice, and it’s very easy to make. Start by combining 1 cup pomegranate juice and 1 cup granulated sugar in a saucepan and place on medium high until it begins to simmer. Reduce to low heat and simmer for 10 minutes, stirring frequently. Allow to cool and store in the refrigerator.
