Imagine if a candy bar fell into a bottle of whiskey. That’s what the Salted Nut Roll Shot tastes like. Made with fragrant Frangelico, uber-decadent peanut butter whiskey, cinnamony RumChata, and a dash of rich cream, this drink toes the line between an adult beverage and a dangerously delicious dessert.

Bar Tools

  • Jigger or small measuring cup
  • Cocktail shaker

To serve: Serve in a shot glass.

Ingredients (One Serving)

  • 2 oz Frangelico
  • ½ oz peanut butter whiskey
  • ½ oz RumChata
  • 1 tbsp. heavy cream
  • Maple (or another) syrup

To garnish: Rim the shot glass in crushed peanuts and kosher salt.

How to Make

Add the Frangelico, peanut butter whiskey, RumChata, and heavy cream to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously for 15 seconds. Strain into a shot glass rimmed with crushed peanuts and kosher salt. If you’re feeling frisky, top the drink with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

To rim the glass, have a plate ready with peanuts and salt.

And have one other plate ready with maple syrup. Dip the rim in the maple syrup to get a sticky coating.

Then dip the glass back into the peanut mixture to get the rum chunked with peanuts and salt.

History

The history of the Salted Nut Roll Shot is a tidbit blurry. We can only assume that it takes inspiration from the Salted Nut Roll, a nut-covered nougat that hit the candy market in 1933. However, since peanut butter whiskey didn’t take the world by storm until 2018, we can only imagine that this drink is a relatively new invention. But who, exactly, invented it? No one truly knows.

FAQs

What kind of whiskey should I use?

We recommend the O.G. of peanut butter whiskeys: Skrewball. On the palate, this hooch offers notes of roasted peanuts, warm honey, spicy vanilla, and toasted oak. It’s sweet, but not overpoweringly so.

What does the Salted Nut Roll Shot taste like?

Our sarcastic answer: Too good. Devilishly good. Like, wake-up-on-a-sidewalk-good. Our serious answer: The Salted Nut Roll Shot is heavy on peanut butter with a quip of toasty vanilla from the Frangelico and a spicy sweetness from the RumChata. Combined with the salty rim, it tastes like a well-rounded dessert from a five-star restaurant.

Can I make this drink dairy-free?

If cow’s milk makes your insides squirm, have no fear. The Salted Nut Roll Shot can be made dairy-free in a cinch. To preserve the succulent flavors, we recommend replacing the cream with equal parts Chobani Extra Creamy Oatmilk. Since RumChata also contains dairy, that’ll need to be swapped too. We suggest Liquor 43 Horchata, a silky-smooth liqueur made from tiger nuts.
