The Presbyterian cocktail (a.k.a. the “Press”) is a simple blend of equal parts Scotch whisky, club soda, and ginger ale. Toothsome and effervescent with a tiny kick of spice, this drink was once sipped (sans spirits) by Presbyterian teetotallers in the late 1800s. Though bartenders now serve the Press with a finger of Scotch, the drink’s pious moniker is here to stay.

History

This cocktail’s backstory is a bit blurry, but historians seem to believe that a Scottish immigrant created the drink during the American temperance movement. Hoping to save himself (or herself) from eternal damnation, the old-timey mixologist skipped the spirits and began drinking a holy mix of club soda and ginger ale. The concoction soon became quite popular among teetotalers and then among Scotch enthusiasts.

FAQs

What kind of Scotch whisky should I use?

A blended Scotch works best in this cocktail. If you’re not looking to spend more than $30, we recommend The Famous Grouse. With undertones of caramel and malt, this liquor pairs well with the spicy bite of ginger. If you’re looking for something a smidge fancier, we recommend Dewar’s Double Double 21-Year-Old Scotch. Silky smooth, Dewar’s is perfect for mixing and sipping.

Why is it called a Presbyterian?

Admittedly, the history of this cocktail is a bit uncertain. But it’s believed that members of the Presbyterian Church sipped a booze-free version during the American temperance movement.

Can I use Irish whiskey?

If you want to stick to tradition, you need to use Scotch. But, technically speaking, you could swap the Scotch for Irish whiskey. The drink may just be a tad sweeter.

Will any type of ginger ale do?

It depends on how bougie you want to be. Sure, some dollar store bubbles will suffice. But if you truly want to impress your guests, opt for a high-brow brand like Fever-Tree.

Can I use a different kind of glass?

Any taller glass will work.
