A virgin mudslide has the taste of the longstanding mudslide cocktail without the boozy effects, instead joining black coffee, heavy cream, cocoa powder, and simple cold milk into a refreshing, caffeinated mocktail.

Vodka alternatives may also be used for those looking for the bitter undertone of a non-alcoholic spirit. Traditionally made with coffee liqueur, the virgin variety substitutes sweetened black coffee.

There are two ways to make a virgin mudslide — the classic, on-the-rocks style or frozen and blended with ice cream. The frozen breed looks and tastes like a chocolate-coffee milkshake. If a lighter version is preferred, the classic mocktail is less sugary but still sings with sweetness and caffeine.

If making frozen, add:

  • 5 oz. Ice cream (a heavy scoop)
  • crushed ice

Yields one serving

How to Make

Classic non-alcoholic instructions: Make black coffee, sweeten with sugar or stevia, and chill. Place vodka alternative or milk, cold coffee, heavy cream, cocoa powder, and a few drops of vanilla extract into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously until well chilled. Layer a coupe glass with lines of chocolate sauce, then strain the drink into a coupe glass with ice. Layer whipped cream on top and sprinkle with chocolate shavings.

Frozen non-alcoholic instructions: Make black coffee and chill after sweetening. Place all ingredients into a blender with a few drops of vanilla extract, ice cream, and crushed ice. Blend until it’s the consistency of a milkshake. Line a hurricane glass with chocolate sauce and pour in the blended drink. Top with whipped cream and chocolate shavings.
