History

The word “julep” means sweet drink and originally was created in the late 18th-century as an emetic (substance to promote throwing up). It eventually borrowed from Mary Poppins’ famous declaration that a spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down, so bourbon and syrup were added to mask any taste of medicine and then eventually became a stand-alone cocktail.

Its association with the Kentucky Derby is no small role. In 2009, over 120,000 mint juleps were sold, some for close to $1,000 a drink as they were served in gold-plated cups and silver straws. A good portion of the money was donated to support retired horses as a charitable cause, which was a smart strategy to keep people thirsty.

FAQs

Does it matter if I use bourbon? Are bourbon and scotch interchangeable?

Whiskey is considered the godfather of grain liquors and bourbon and scotch are its beloved descendants. Bourbon was born in the South and Scotch — as the name implies — originated in Scotland. Because of this, their respective grains and barrels and general environmental conditions vary, and so do their taste. Bourbon is made with corn grain and generally considered sweeter, while Scotch puts barley through a malting process and taste smokier.

Why did my bartender slap the mint on the back of their hand?

This is one way to help release the oils so that the mint is more aromatic.

What is the difference between a Mint Julep and Mojito?

They are very close except for their base liquors. Mint Julep uses bourbon and a Mojitouses rum and lime juice.
