Chocolate Martinis may be the ultimate dessert cocktail, with vodka, chocolate liqueur, Bailey’s Irish Cream liqueur, and some chocolate sauce for good measure. Don’t let the tini name fool you though — this one doesn’t share many similarities to your traditional martinis outside of its glassware. It’s a sweet, creamy drink that could just as easily go down like a chocolate milkshake. So save some room during dinner and look forward to one of these as the perfect nightcap to unwind with.

History

The Chocolate Martini is said to have originated on the set of a Hollywood film back in 1955 while silver screen legends Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor were filming Giant. Both shared a love for chocolate — to the point that they decided to add it to their Vodka Martinis one night. And voila, the inspiration for the iconic drink was born just like that.

The truth is, chocolate and alcohol have a long history together. So whether or not the two movie icons actually created the first Chocolate Martini isn’t certain. It is, however, a great story for such a popular drink.

FAQ

Can this martini be either shaken or stirred, like the traditional martini?

Shaking mixed drinks is often an intentional method for blending ingredients. The broken-down ice that comes from a good shaking melts over time to dilute the drink and give balance to its ingredients. While this method may be a matter of preference for a classic Vodka or Gin Martini, it’s actually very appropriate for the intended sweetness of the Chocolate Martini.

Can I use flavored vodka for this drink?

A vanilla vodka is a popular option for many Chocolate Martini recipes that will work just fine. But there’s no shortage of flavored vodka options out there today, which means you are welcome to try out the flavor of anything you typically like to pair with chocolate.

For a martini, there isn’t much vodka in this recipe.

A 1-1-1 ratio is a common characteristic of most Chocolate Martini recipes but this isn’t some rule that can’t be broken. You may like a little more vodka in your own Chocolatetini but keep in mind that the even-parts recipe is intended to create a balanced drink that is sweet and tasty, not stiff.
