History

The Chancellor cocktail is thought to have originated in the London area but much of the early history of this cocktail is unknown. It first appeared in the 1930s Café Royal Cocktail Book, mentioned only by name in the “Supplementary Cocktail List” section.

As noted in the Café Royal Cocktail Book, the Supplementary Cocktail List was a section of “many cocktails of which space forbids giving the recipes.”

The first known recipe in print of Chancellor cocktail is featured in the 1977 book, Jones’ Complete Barguide. This recipe calls for Peychaud’s Bitters and was later adapted by famed cocktail historian David Wondrich to use more user-friendly orange bitters instead.
