The Bobby Burns Cocktail is a classic, 3-ingredient scotch drink cored by blended scotch whiskey and supported by sweet vermouth and Benedictine to offset scotch’s malty spice. Originating from cocktail books over a century old, the Bobby Burns has gone through a few growth spurts, especially in its name (more on this below). Generally, though, the cocktail is equal-parts scotch and vermouth accompanied by a half helping of Benedictine.

History
The Bobby Burns dates back to 1902 when it was first featured in Fancy Drinks — but its genesis began fittingly as the Baby Burns cocktail. Over subsequent decades, the name fledged into the Bobby Burns cocktail, supposedly after the Scottish poet, Robert Burns.
FAQs
Which Scotch should I use?
A mid-range blended scotch will work well in this drink. If you’re aiming for the finer edges, try Monkey Shoulder Blended Scotch Whiskey (voted Best Overall Blended Scotch by Liquor.com in 2022).
Which sweet vermouth is recommended?
For sweet vermouth, Noilly Prat Rouge is popular in the Bobby Burns cocktail.
Is this drink sweet or strong?
Both. It’s heavy-handed with alcohol, but there’s a touch of sweetness from the vermouth that allays the overpowering punch of scotch.
