The Black Russian is a smooth and simple combination of vodka and Kahlúa coffee liqueur over ice. And the simplicity of this drink just might be its best quality, providing such a distinct taste that the Black Russian mixture became the foundation of several other predecessors. So, if you’re a fan of White Russians, the Colorado Bulldog, and Mudslides, then you’re likely a fan of this vodka and Kahlúa combo they all derived from.

History

The Black Russian’s name is nothing more than a nod to its ingredients. The Kahlúa coffee liqueur gives the drink its dark color while the Russian part of its name simply comes from the vodka base.

In fact, this origin story seems to involve just about every nation besides Russia. In the late 1940s, Perle Mesta was a well-known American socialite and also the United States ambassador to Luxembourg. She was well-known for her lavish parties back in the states, which were attended by political figures and celebrities. So, when Mesta stayed at the Hotel Metropole in Brussels, a hotel bartender went out of his way to make a drink just for her. And that’s how and when the Black Russian was born.

FAQs

What’s the difference between a Black Russian and a White Russian?

As mentioned, the Black Russian preceded the White Russian. They are nearly identical drinks, only a White Russian has milk.

Is there any way to alter this recipe without making it an entirely different drink?

The 2-1 vodka to Kahlúa ratio is the classic standard for Black Russians, but those who prefer something a touch sweeter can simply go with an even 1-1 ratio in their drink. Give it a try!

Can I use a different coffee liqueur than Kahlúa?

While Kahlúa is traditional, any coffee liqueur (preferably of good quality) will work in this drink.
