A mix of fall and winter flavors, the Apple Cider Old Fashioned is a holiday drink featuring bourbon, orange bitters, maple syrup, and, of course, apple cider.

This variation on the classic cocktail chooses to lengthen the overall drink, creating an old fashioned experience that is less harsh than the traditional and focuses on complementary flavors of apple to enhance the flavor of the bourbon while still letting the bourbon shine through.

Apple Cider Old Fashioned FAQs

What kind of bourbon should I use?

This cocktail boldly features bourbon and, as such, any bourbon you enjoy would work well here. Buffalo Trace Bourbon works very well in this cocktail, as the rounder and softer notes pair well with the added spice and flavor from the apple cider.

Can I use rye whiskey for this cocktail?

Rye whiskey can be substituted for bourbon, but it should be noted that the drier and spicier notes of the rye will unbalance the drink.

Can I use a different sweetener than maple syrup?

If you’re short on maple syrup, simple syrup can be substituted 1:1 for maple syrup.

Can I serve this drink hot?

To serve hot, add bourbon, bitters, and maple syrup to a mug and top it with hot apple cider.
