Butterbeer is a fictional beverage from the Harry Potter series, and it tastes liquid version of butterscotch. The characters in the series frequently ordered this fun beverage, which was served cold or hot and foamy, making this a perfect fall drink. This recipe is for alcoholic butterbeer, but it can be also served sans alcohol.

You don’t need to take the Hogwarts Express to the Three Broomsticks (or Universal Studios) to try some Butterbeer of your very own. What better way is there to enjoy the spooky season than whipping up some adult Butterbeer at home?

For expert-level display, we recommend serving in a large, chilled beer mug rimmed lightly with brown sugar and topped with the butterscotch whipped topping. Moreover, you can make the whipped topping boozy by adding in the butterscotch schnapps instead of the syrup.

The now-famous Butterbeer is a fictional drink that appears in the Harry Potter series, so it makes a perfect addition to a Harry Potter watch party or a Halloween party. You might even choose to make some adult Butterbeer while you marathon all eight of the Harry Potter movies.

Enjoy Butterbeer while repping your very own Hogwarts House. You can jazz up your garnish game by adding Harry Potter House straws or flags to your drinks, like these ones on Pinterest.

For general party decor to go along with these drinks, you could add a cauldron to your tabletop or pair your Butterbeer with other Harry Potter-themed sweet treats like Chocolate Frogs, Bertie Bott’s Every Flavored Beans, and more.

You can also play some Harry Potter party games. There are many on-theme ideas on Pinterest and other places online that are easy to set up.

FAQs

What does Butterbeer taste like?

Butterbeer has a strong and sweet butterscotch taste, but it contains carbonation from the cream soda and is much thinner and more refreshing.

Can it be made alcohol-free?

Some simple swaps can make this drink non-alcoholic, but use care and properly label drinks if you are making some Butterbeers virgin and some not. Simply swap out the schnapps and vodka for butterscotch syrup and vanilla extract to make this drink non-alcoholic.

What kind of butterscotch schnapps is recommended for Butterbeer?

We recommend a simple DeKuyper Buttershots Schnapps Liqueur for your alcoholic Butterbeer. This pick is easy to find at local liquor stores and has great reviews for its brown sugar and melted butter flavorings.

Is this recipe accurate to the series?

Unfortunately, the series is not very specific on the components of Butterbeer, but the flavors are well-described in the books.
